Director General for “Regulation and Supervision of the Financial System” at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance
Stefano Cappiello is Director General for “Regulation and Supervision of the Financial System” at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. He also represents the Ministry in several committees with regulatory functions within the European Union, and the Financial Stability Board. After graduating in Law and earning a master’s degree in Law and Economics from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Economic Law, he was engaged in the regulation and supervision of the banking and financial sector as a senior manager at the Bank of Italy (1999-2008), Senior Advisor at the Italian Ministry of Finance (2008-2011), Head of Unit at the European Banking Authority (2011-2015), and at the Single Resolution Board (2015-2018). He was NYU Visiting Scholar in 2006, and Programme Director at the Florence School of Banking and Finance of the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence in 2018. He has published numerous articles in national and international law reviews, in the areas of financial and corporate law.
