Emeritus Professor of Law at Heidelberg University, Institute of Comparative Law, Conflict of Laws and International Business Law
Law at Heidelberg University, and Arbitrator at the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague. From 2010-2012 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law. He is Honorary Member of the Governing Council of UNIDROIT, where he served as Secretary-General from 1998-2008. He taught and did research as Visiting Professor in different foreign universities. He is author of more than 150 books and articles in the fields of the law of contracts, commercial law, company law and capital markets law, conflict of laws, international civil procedure, and arbitration. He has been a member of the Arbitral Council of the Milan Chamber of Arbitration since 2023 and, previously, from 2013-2017, and he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the German Arbitration Institute (2016-2021) and as member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration (2003-2018).
